These trees and their light confound me

and there is a tanager across the lake. There is a tanager

across the lake and the trees rise into sky

where they begin. The sky has no beginning, yet ends

across the lake. Where there is a tanager. There is a tanager

across the lake and I love you more than your words.

All my life these words were all I had, now I look in the birds

for you. There is a tanager across the lake

I see its light in the trees. What trees they are I do not know

though trees they are. It is a faraway spot of scarlet

on green, the most lush green I have seen in months. The tanager

has returned and brought with it color. There is a tanager

across the lake, it is there because I see it or it moves

or it sings into this afternoon at the rocky shore of this lake

when the trees looked as if they could touch the sky.

There is a tanager across the lake, whisper

in its presence, for though it seems to always return

a tanager sits in a tree across the lake.
